“The player who tested positive for COVID-19 last night chose not to train with his teammates this afternoon,” AOC said.

“All close contacts were tested.

“A second player who was in close contact also tested positive, but he is in good enough condition to train.

“The water polo team correctly implemented the AOC respiratory illness protocols, which allowed for early detection and treatment. A reminder was sent to all teams to reinforce the protocols.”

Neither player’s name was released, and no other athletes on the Paris team have been diagnosed.

Two members of the squad were due to attend the Australian team’s regular morning press conference on Tuesday but withdrew as a precaution.

“This is a high-performance environment, so we are being careful, but I have to emphasize that we are not treating COVID any differently than other diseases like influenza. This is not Tokyo,” Meares said.

“We were able to get a really good idea of what was going on.

“What was very positive about this situation and this athlete was that they followed the protocols… and at the first sign of symptoms they responsibly went to the medical team to get tested.”

The Australian team has its own medical testing equipment for diseases such as COVID-19 and influenza.

Meares said “a few” unnamed officials on the Australian team showed cold and flu symptoms and were being treated in the same way as the water polo players.

Australia’s first women’s water polo match will be played against China on Saturday evening.
