Victorian rugby sevens player overcomes injury to qualify for 2024 Olympic Games

Victorian rugby sevens superstar Caroline Crossley is making her third appearance at the Olympic Games this summer.

Crossley, 26, previously competed with the national team in Santiago in 2023 and Lima in 2019.

According to the Canada Olympics, Crossley started out playing rugby on a middle school boys’ team before moving on to the club team founded by his father.

The Oak Bay High School graduate made her international debut at the 2015 Youth Commonwealth Games, where Canada won the silver medal. She has been a standout since joining the senior women’s national sevens team, competing at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco. In 2019, she helped Canada win the gold medal at the Kitakyushu stop of the World Rugby Sevens Series.

Crossley has overcome recent injury woes over the past two years with surgery and rehabilitation, according to his long-time club Castaway Wanderers (CW). The club say the injury has kept Greater Victoria rugby phenom Sophie de Goede out of the Olympics.

The Paris Games will be held from July 26 to August 11 with the participation of 10,500 athletes in 329 events.

Canada’s women’s 7s team will play in Group A on July 28 at 8:30 a.m. PST with Fiji set to play New Zealand later that day at 12:30 p.m. The team will face China on July 29 at 7 a.m. PST with placement matches set to begin later that day.

The bronze medal match will be held on July 30 at 10:00, and the gold medal match will be held at 10:45.
