New UWS stadium set to host fall games – Superior Telegram

SUPERIOR — Construction is underway on Superior Choice Community Credit Union Stadium at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, according to Jon Garver, the college’s director of athletic communications. The $7.1 million project is scheduled for a grand opening on Sept. 21.

Passersby can expect the field to take shape starting this week.

“They’ll start putting the grass down on Friday. By the middle of next week you’ll see the field come down and they’ll start pouring the track. The stands will be put up in the coming weeks,” Garver said on Aug. 6.

UWS football teams will begin practice and play their first show on the Superior High School field.

“We always knew this was an imminent possibility and we created a contingency plan to secure this facility in the event that construction continued into September,” Garver said.

He said the Yellow Jackets will play on the field this fall but it is too soon to tell whether they will play their first regular-season game.

The UWS women’s soccer team will begin with two friendly matches before moving into regular season action, according to a schedule announced by the college on Aug. 2. The ‘Jackets will face St. Scholastica at Kenny Harkins Field on Tuesday, Aug. 20. UWS will then travel to UW-Stout for another friendly at Nelson Field.

The team opens the regular season with seven consecutive home games, starting with a match against UW-LaCrosse on Friday, August 30.

The UWS men’s soccer team schedule was released on August 1. The team will play three friendly games before beginning regular season play on the road at UW-River Falls on Monday, August 19 at 5:30 p.m. UWS will then play a doubleheader against Northern Michigan and St. Scholastica in Superior on Monday, August 26.

The Yellowjackets will face five non-conference opponents to begin regular season play. Their first regular season test will be on the road against Augsburg on Friday, August 30.
