Hornqvist, now in the Panthers’ executive office, celebrates with the Cup

Patric Hornqvist had the opportunity to see an old friend in Sweden this weekend.

The former forward, who played 15 NHL seasons and won back-to-back Stanley Cup titles with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017, currently serves as a scout and development consultant for the defending champion Florida Panthers and won the trophy in his hometown.

Hornqvist said there was no comparison between winning as a player and as a member of the team’s management, but it was still pretty sweet to see the trophy again.

“You can’t compare it. There’s a big difference between being on the ice and being on the board. On the ice, you can control what happens… I scored the winning goal in one of the Finals against Pittsburgh, and you can’t compare that to what it’s like to win from the stands,” Hornqvist said. “But still, as a player and as a leader, the Stanley Cup is the greatest award you can win in hockey. Winning it as part of the board… for me, the biggest thing was seeing the joy on the ice when the players lifted the trophy.”

Hornqvist opted for a quiet day by the water with his family, even letting his kids turn the trophy into the world’s largest candy dish.
