Vashti Cunningham misses out on Olympic medal in women’s high jump | Olympics

Former Bishop Gorman athlete and Las Vegas native Vashti Cunningham failed to medal in the women’s high jump final on Sunday.

Cunningham was part of a six-way tie for third at 1.95 meters. Iryna Gerashchenko of Ukraine and Eleanor Patterson of Australia shared the bronze medal thanks to a total misses tiebreaker. They each had three. Cunningham had four to finish in fifth place.

“Today, in my opinion, went better (than Friday’s qualifying round). I cleared more bars and had better attempts,” Cunningham said. “It’s crazy that it came down to the height that I did to medal and just miss out on everyone else.”

Cunningham’s first miss was 1.91 meters. The other three were 1.98 meters. The 26-year-old’s Olympic best finish came in 13th in 2016 and sixth in 2021.

“This has been a different season for me than any season I’ve ever had before,” Cunningham said. “I’m just learning to deal with it and know that the battle I’m facing is not about medals. It’s different. It’s spiritual. I feel like I won the battle today.”

Cunningham has been dealing with a bulging disc for the past few months. He said he felt fine when he arrived in Paris but it started flaring up after a workout on Sunday.

“That’s not why I didn’t jump as high as I wanted to,” Cunningham said. “I was happy with my performance. I was happy when I got to the bar, and I knew what I did wrong when I missed it.”

Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Australia’s Nicola Olyslagers each completed the 2-meter distance, with Mahuchikh missing three shots to take the gold medal. Olyslagers needed five more shots to take the silver.

Women’s basketball: Aces guard Jackie Young scored 19 points to help the U.S. beat Germany 87-68 in pool play. A’ja Wilson added 14 points and Kelsey Plum had six points and five assists. The U.S. finished 3-0 in Group C and will play in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Men’s Golf: Las Vegas resident Min Woo Lee, playing for Australia, shot a 3-under 68 in the final round and tied for 22nd place with 7-under 277. Las Vegas resident Collin Morikawa, representing Team USA, tied for 24th place with 6-under 278. He shot a 1-under 70 in the final round.

Men’s swimming: Ilya Kharun, who trains with the Sandpipers from Nevada, helped Canada finish fifth in the 4×100 medley relay final (3:31.27). China won the gold (3:27.46) and the United States won the silver (3:28.01). Kharun, 19, won two individual bronze medals in the 100- and 200-meter butterfly.
