Ketel Marte is not in the lineup for Friday’s game against the Phillies

A day after his manager said he was “a little tired,” Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte will not be in the lineup for Friday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies, as will right-handed pitcher Zack Wheeler.

Marte went 0 for 4 on Thursday night with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts, and after the game, manager Torey Lovullo said Marte’s workload, which included playing second base on both ends of Wednesday’s doubleheader in Cleveland, contributed to his hitting difficulties.

“I’ve got to be really careful with guys and their workloads,” Lovullo said Friday. “Ketel is definitely a body and mind that I pay very close attention to. He needs to rest. He’s playing a lot of baseball. He’s playing at a high level.”

Lovullo said he still blames himself for first baseman Christian Walker’s oblique muscle injury, which he said has been the reason he has played in almost every game so far this year, and that others, including third baseman Eugenio Suarez, will need to take the next few days off.

Diamondbacks option Slade Cecconi, recall Scott McGough

The Diamondbacks made one change in the bullpen ahead of Friday night’s game, sending right-hander Slade Cecconi to Triple-A Reno and recalling right-hander Scott McGough.

Cecconi went three innings and allowed two runs Thursday night and likely won’t be available to pitch for several days. Cecconi has allowed five runs in 7⅓ innings of relief during his tenure in these majors.

McGough made his last shot on Wednesday, and Reno needed 15 shots to keep a clean sheet.
