July 28, 1984 — Dave Vandermissen of Wilson scores a double win by taking the checkered flag in the Class 1 and 2 races at the Upper Peninsula 100 off-road race at Bark River.

Wilson’s Doug Motto took victory in the Class 2 1600 race. Wilson’s Roger Tournangeau took first place in the Class 14 Odyssey. Gladstone’s Scott Thompson won the Class 15 Odyssey and Harris’ Leo Jorasz won the Class 17 ATC.

The Escanaba Little League All-Stars were eliminated from the UP tournament, losing to Ontonagon Lake of the Clouds in a 12-5 decision. Eric Braun collected three hits, including a solo home run, and Scott Odgers added a solo hit for Esky.

July 30, 1984 — The Escanaba Cubs win their first UP American Legion baseball championship in 15 years, defeating Marquette, 4-3. Paul Mattson led the Cubs with three hits and winning pitcher Marty Fittante allowed nine hits.

Aug. 2, 1984 — Becky Iverson of Gladstone shot 83 to win the Class A girls’ title at the UP Golf Association’s Junior Championship at Highland Golf Club, 11 strokes ahead of runner-up Laura Bittner of Highland. Lisa Bittner of Highland shot 48 to win the Class C title and Trina Beck shot 63 to take the Class D crown.

August 3, 1984 — The Gladstone Girls’ Little League All-Stars capitalized on eight errors in an 8-6 victory over Lincoln Park in the state softball tournament. Full-base walks to Jennifer Ostlund and Kelly Sachinski in the fourth inning gave Gladstone the win.

July 31, 1989 — Gladstone’s day at the American Legion regional tournament was not the same as the Indians, who lost twice to Copper Country. The Indians lost to host Calumet, 14-7, and Iron Mountain Green, 10-0. Jamie Lyle pitched the opening three hits. Terry Randall took the loss in the first game and Marc Nault was tagged for the loss in the night game.

Aug. 1, 1989 — Jim Margetta of Gogebic Country Club in Ironwood wins the Upper Peninsula Golf Association Junior championship with a 2-under-par 69 at Highland Golf Club. He is followed by Joe Mendelin of Marquette with 73, Dennis Hruska of Marquette with 74, and Brian Robinette of Escanaba.

Aug. 2, 1989 — The New York Mets trade Kevin Tapani of Escanaba to the Minnesota Twins for Cy Young winner Frank Viola. Tapani, who pitched for the Mets’ Triple A team in Tidewater, Va., was assigned to the Twins’ Triple A team in Portland, Ore., of the Pacific Coast League. Tapani went 7–5 with a 3.47 earned run average for Tidewater. He had 63 strikeouts and 25 walks in 109 at-bats.

The Gladstone Senior Boys’ Little League All-Stars lost a 3-2 baseball decision to Taylor Northwest in the state finals. Trailing 2-0, Gladstone tied the game in the third inning on a sacrifice bunt by Doug Sanville and tied the game in the fifth inning on a single by Sanville.

Reade Hubert collected three hits and hit two home runs, leading the Escanaba Hawks to a 19-7 baseball victory over Manistique in four innings. Lonnie Poupore, Tom Ohman and Steve Crighton each added two hits. Tom Selling led Manistique with two hits.

Gladys Hansen made her first hole-in-one in her 40-year career with a 6-iron on the 90-yard No. 3 hole at Escanaba Country Club. Karen Wiles made a 39 in the women’s league, followed by Polly Gregorie who made a 42.

Gregoire was part of the winning team in the pari-mutuel event, which also included Barb Pfotenhauer, Patti Peterson and Lois Thompson. Wiles was joined by Sarah Hansen, Naomi Taylor and Jean Chapekis for runners-up.
