BRICK, N.J. — The Brick Recreation Department is now accepting registrations for the 22nd season of its Winter Basketball Leagues. The program, set to start on October 21 and run through March 7, welcomes boys in grades 4-12 and girls in grades 4-9 to participate.

This initiative offers a structured environment for young athletes to hone their basketball skills, emphasizing teamwork, sportsmanship, and player development. With the guidance of experienced coaches, the leagues are designed to accommodate varying levels of experience, from novices to more advanced players.

The registration fee for the season is $75 per player. To ensure balanced team formations, mandatory player assessments will take place from October 7 to October 10 for all participants in grades 4-8.

  • Fatal Shooting in Harlem Results in Homicide Ruling

    HARLEM, NY — Police were dispatched to the scene of a shooting early Saturday morning on July 13, at 137 West 144 Street in the 32nd Precinct, where they found 24-year-old Tresean Gilchrist from the Bronx suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower left abdomen .

    The incident, which occurred at approximately 1:00 AM, left Gilchrist unconscious and unresponsive.

    Emergency Medical Services promptly transported Gilchrist to NYC Health and Hospitals in critical condition. Unfortunately, after battling his injuries for several weeks, Gilchrist succumbed on August 3. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has officially declared his death a homicide.

    Further details about the investigation or any potential suspects have not been disclosed at this time.

  • Shooting on Jamaica Avenue Leaves Man Critically Injured

    QUEENS, NY — A violent altercation on Monday, August 5, at 119-11 Jamaica Avenue escalated to a shooting at approximately 10:40 PM, leaving a 34-year-old man critically wounded. The incident involved two unidentified males who, after a dispute, one of them discharged a firearm multiple times, striking the victim.

    Emergency services rushed the victim to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he is currently listed in critical but stable condition. Following the shooting, both suspects fled the scene on foot.

    Authorities are actively searching for the two suspects. The first is described as a male with a dark complexion, last seen wearing a tan baseball cap, eyeglasses, a dark-colored t-shirt with a white design, a black fanny pack, dark-colored pants, and black sneakers. The second suspect, also with a dark complexion, was wearing a black baseball cap, eyeglasses, a blue t-shirt, gray sweatpants, and white sneakers.
