Sophia Smith Punch US Women’s National Team’s Ticket to Gold Medal Match with Magnificent Overtime Goal

Sophia Smith punched her ticket to the U.S. women’s soccer gold medal match on her 23rd birthday.

After a scoreless 90 minutes at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, the Americans entered extra time against Germany looking for the game’s first goal. They found it about five minutes into the extra period.

USWNT forward Mallory Swanson sent a pass to Smith, who raced for the ball past Germany goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger and defender Felicitas Rauch. Smith slid just inside the penalty area as she slotted the ball between Berger and Rauch and into the net.

1–0, United States.

Smith’s teammates pounced on her to celebrate the goal that sent the United States into the gold medal game on Saturday. Smith has scored or assisted on a goal in four of the U.S. women’s national team’s five Olympic games in Paris.

“I don’t remember anything that happened, to be honest,” Smith told NBC’s Mike Tirico after the game. “I just know Mal (Swanson) made a perfect pass to me and I saw an open net in front of me and I knew I had to step up in a big moment. I feel like I have to do that for this team. We worked hard.”

Smith was on the U.S. women’s national team that was surprisingly eliminated by Sweden in the Round of 16 of the 2023 FIFA World Cup in Australia. The Americans now have a shot at their first gold medal in women’s soccer after winning three consecutive Olympic tournaments from 2004 to ’12.

“It means absolutely everything. We had a tough year last year,” Smith said. “Things didn’t go our way (at the World Cup). We know we’re better than that; we have a lot of potential in this group. We’re a young group, but we can be very good. … This is proof of that.”

Team USA will face the winner of the Brazil-Spain semifinal match at the Parc des Princes on Saturday for the gold medal.
