Duke Basketball Team Warns About Avoiding Dominant Guard

Duke basketball’s four transfers are no strangers to weights, especially in the case of former four-year Tulane guard Sion James.

RELATING TO: Duke’s veteran newcomer says ‘everything we need is there’

A strikingly sculpted 6-foot-6-inch frame like his represents a powerhouse that Jon Scheyer’s first two Duke basketball teams lacked. And the Blue Devils’ social media accounts don’t hide it.

Judging by the photos below released Wednesday night — not to mention the caption, “A few moves for those thinking of attacking Sion James this season” — one might conclude that Duke is trying to plant a seed of fear in the minds of 2024-25 opponents who might dare to get in the way of the program’s new human bulldozer:

He looks even bigger than he did last season at Tulane, where he played as an aggressive weapon on both ends of the floor and averaged 14.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game. Now, Sion James, 21, a lifelong Duke basketball fan, has a chance to compete for an immediate starting spot in Durham.

If he can’t fill that role, he’ll almost certainly be one of the first Blue Devils players to come off the bench and serve as the team’s big outside defensive spark plug.
