Andy Murray says Paris Olympics will be his ‘last tennis tournament’

Andy Murray has removed any doubts about his tennis future by announcing that he will be ending his tennis career after the Paris Olympics.

The 37-year-old, who has battled injuries and surgeries to continue her legendary career, hopes to make her fifth Olympic appearance for Great Britain, competing in singles and doubles.

“I’ve arrived in Paris for my final tennis tournament,” the 2012 and 2016 Olympic medallist wrote in X. “Competing for Team GB has been one of the most memorable weeks of my career and I’m so proud to be doing it for the last time!”

Murray has battled a series of career-threatening injuries over the past few years, including a hip resurfacing, and has bounced back each time. He played his final Wimbledon this summer but has been unable to play singles matches as he recovers from back surgery. His final appearance on the Centre grass court was an emotional one, in which he and his brother Jamie lost a doubles match in front of family members.

The athlete then gave a speech in which the legendary Wimbledon champions paid tribute and expressed how difficult a physical struggle the sport of tennis has become.

“I’m ready to finish playing. I don’t want it to be like this,” he told the crowd that day. “As I said, I would love to play forever. But today, even though it was a doubles match that was obviously not very physically demanding, it’s still very difficult for me. … This year has been tough with my ankle, then of course my back surgery, of course my hip. I’m ready to finish playing because I can’t play at the level I want to anymore.

“I think it’s something that’s a little bit out of my control. If I knew my body could do it, I would play it – there’s nothing about the sport that I hate and I’m like, I don’t want to do it anymore. I love the travel. I love the competition, the practice, trying to get better, all that stuff.

“I know the time has come. Yes, I’m ready for it.”
