Spirit beat Chivas de Guadalajara to open NWSL Summer Cup

With goals from Paige Metayer and Lena Silano, the short-handed Washington Spirit opened the NWSL Summer Cup with a 2-1 win over Mexico’s Chivas de Guadalajara on Sunday in Chester, Pennsylvania.

Metayer opened the scoring in the Group D match at Subaru Park with a header in the 13th minute, then Silano doubled the Spirit’s lead in the 47th minute after parlaying a pass from Brittany Ratcliffe. The duo, usually substitutes, seized the opportunity to start for a squad that was six players short due to the Paris Olympics.

Alicia Cervantes narrowed the gap for Chivas to one with a header in the 68th minute, but Washington held on.

The Spirit will continue their midseason tournament featuring teams from the NWSL and Mexico’s Liga MX Femenil with games against Gotham FC next Sunday at Subaru Park and the Chicago Red Stars on July 31 at City Stadium in Richmond.
