Mookie Betts will move from shortstop to right fielder when he returns to the Dodgers next week

LOS ANGELES — Mookie Betts will move back from shortstop to right field when he joins the Los Angeles Dodgers roster next week.

Manager Dave Roberts said Betts will sign with Milwaukee on Monday, where the NL West leader will open a four-game series.

“Right now, he’s more confident at right field than he is at shortstop,” Roberts said.

Three days ago, Roberts said Betts would remain at shortstop but would drop to No. 2 in the rankings after suffering a broken left hand.

Shohei Ohtani will continue to lead the batting order with a . 290 batting average, 15 home runs, 33 runs scored and 35 RBIs since Betts was injured on June 16.

Betts moved to the leadoff position shortly after joining the Dodgers from the Boston Red Sox in 2020, where he announced he preferred to be. He had a . 304 batting average with 10 home runs in 72 games before being hit by a pitch and injuring his hand.

The Dodgers’ starting five will consist of Ohtani, Betts and Freddie Freeman starting next week.
