As we approach the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics on August 11, let’s take a look back at the most important moments that we will continue to talk about long after the flame has gone out.

French pole vaulter Anthony Ammirati has sent the internet into a tizzy after viewers speculated he had missed out on a medal because of his “bloating”.

After a video was released on August 3 showing the athlete’s groin hitting the pole, further examination revealed that Ammirati had hit the pole first with his shins and knees, meaning that it was already a failed dive.

As PEOPLE previously explained, that jump overall was not the reason she failed to advance to the pole vault finals. Despite achieving the first two heights in the pole vault — 5.40 and 5.60 meters — she failed to complete her attempts at 5.70 meters.

Ammirati poked fun at the hype surrounding her Olympic performance, sharing a video on TikTok that reads: “POV: tu fais more de buzz pour ton paquet que pour tes perfs,” which roughly translates to “POV: You generate more excitement for your package than your performances.”

“I’m sorry my love, I’m so sorry,” Gianmarco wrote in Italian on Instagram alongside photos of the couple.

“The truth is, I heard it slipping away, I saw it flying… I followed it with my eyes until I saw it bouncing inside the boat,” he continued. “A glimmer of hope… But unfortunately the bounce was in the wrong direction and it glided through the air more than a thousand times, I saw it dive into the water as if that was the only place it wanted to be.”

“The one who flew away while trying to carry the Italian tricolor as high as possible during the opening ceremony of the world’s most important sporting event will remain forever in the riverbed of the city of love. If I had to make up an excuse, I would never be so creative,” he continued, later adding that if he “threw” his too, the rings could be “together forever”.
