Brookfield school district to temporarily postpone athletic events | News, Sports, Jobs

BROOKFIELD — Brookfield Local Schools plans to relocate some fall athletic competitions due to safety concerns caused by construction at the football field on Bedford Road.

These include varsity football, junior varsity football, middle school football and high school football competitions, according to a press release from the district.

In December 2023, the Brookfield Board of Education approved action to renovate the soccer field on Bedford Road, which will also serve as a football field after construction. The renovations included bleacher expansions and additions, an updated home-side press box and the relocation of lights and goalposts, the release states.

Brookfield Athletic Director Ken Forsythe said he and the school prioritize the safety of students, athletes, visitors and community members.

“While the construction is a temporary inconvenience, the improvements will greatly improve our facilities for future events.” said. “We appreciate everyone’s patience and look forward to welcoming our fans to our renovated stadium as soon as possible.”

Brookfield Finance Minister Jordan Weber said: “surplus in general fund budget” helped finance the project.

“The strategic use of this money allows us to improve our facilities without any cuts to classroom funding.” said. “We are committed to providing the best possible educational environment and resources for Brookfield students and staff and we are confident that these improvements will provide a stadium the community can be proud of.”

The project will cost approximately $1.1 million.

Weber said construction delays occurred because the district was waiting for approval from Trumbull County and was behind schedule.

“Delays on a small job are spread across several parts” said. “It didn’t feel safe to rush. We want to make sure everything is done (and) safe before we start the season. The type of work that needs to be done is not the type of work you want to rush into.”

He said that all that remained was to build the press box and do some landscaping work.

Because construction is not yet complete, this season’s first varsity football game will be moved to Hubbard High School Memorial Stadium and will begin at 7 p.m. on Aug. 23. Locations for other athletic events will be announced as they are finalized.
