Kiteboarding and kitesurfing to be added to Paris 2024 Olympics, karate and baseball to be removed

Montalvo, 30, became the first American to win the WDSF World Breaking Championship last year by defeating Wizard in the final and earning the Olympic right to break.

The 27-year-old Wizard won the WDSF championship in 2022.

The 2023 world champion in the B-Girl category is 17-year-old Nicka (Dominika Banevic) from Lithuania and Japanese Ami (Ami Yuasa) will be names to watch out for.

New canoe slalom event, cross country skiing

Canoe slalom, which was included in the Olympics for the first time in the 1972 Munich Olympics, will be included in the Olympics this year, along with cross-country skiing, which will be included for the first time in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Cross-country skiing is an extreme canoe slalom in which competitors race across foamy water, pushing each other with paddles.

Olympic events will begin with timed solo runs before four competitors will face each other to compete for space on the course, creating a frenetic competitive environment where rankings change rapidly and contact is almost inevitable.

Britain’s world champion Joe Clarke and Australia’s Jessica Fox are favourites to win a first gold medal in the event, but the chaotic nature of the four-man race makes it almost impossible to predict.

Equal numbers of men and women will compete in the competitions, where a total of six medals will be awarded.

Kiteboarding to make Olympic debut

Kiteboarding, also known as kitesurfing, is a fast-paced sport that will feature among the 10 sailing events at Paris 2024 for the first time in Olympic history.

Kiteboarding will be carried out with 20 male and 20 female participants in the Formula Kite format, using approved kites in wind speeds ranging from 5 to 40 knots.

American Daniela Moroz and Maximilian Maeder The Singaporeans will be among those to watch, with Moroz number one in the women’s Formula Kite rankings and Maeder number one in the men’s category.

There will be three new mixed events in sailing, including mixed kiteboarding and mixed 470.

Other changes

Modern pentathlon was previously completed in one day, but the Paris 2024 semi-finals and final will be compressed into 90 minutes. The disciplines will also have new rankings and short rest intervals.

In athletics, repechage will be added to all individual track events from 200m to 1500m. The mixed team race walk, replacing the individual 50km, will also make its Olympic debut at Paris 2024.

Men will be eligible to compete in artistic swimming for the first time in Olympic history. An acrobatics team routine has also been added to the program.

A new weight class will be created for women in boxing, called bantamweight, while the light heavyweight class for men will be abolished.

In shooting, the skeet mixed team competition will replace the trap mixed team competition.

In volleyball, teams will be divided into three groups of four and three matches will be played in the group stage.

Two extreme canoe slalom events have been added and two canoe sprint events have been removed.

What new sports are returning from Tokyo?

Paris organisers have also included sport climbing, skateboarding and surfing, all of which are set to feature as additional events at Tokyo 2020.

In climbing, two events will be held in Paris for male and female competitors; speed climbing and combined rock climbing and leadership competition.

There will be two disciplines in skateboarding: street and park.

Forty-eight surfers will compete in the shortboard events held in Teahupo’o, Tahiti, some 10,000 miles from the Games’ main venues.

Which sports have been removed?

Karate, which made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, was not included in the 2024 Games. Baseball and softball were also left off the list in Paris but will return in Los Angeles 2028.
