SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Nev. — Former tennis player Mardy Fish won the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament for the second time on Sunday, beating NHL player Joe Pavelski by four points.

Fish, 42, shot a 26-under round at Edgewood Tahoe under Stableford’s modified scoring system to finish with an 83, one point shy of the record set by Billy Joe Tolliver in 2010. Players receive one point for par, three points for birdie and six points for eagle, while two points are deducted for double bogey or worse.

“I’ve won a couple of the big-name golf tournaments, so I felt comfortable coming here having won in Dallas and Maine,” said Fish, who is also the 2020 winner. “And that’s really what you want to win. American Century is basically the Super Bowl, the culmination of the rest of the year.”

Dallas Stars forward Pavelski, who announced he will retire after 18 NHL seasons, scored 29 points on Sunday.

“When you’re chasing Fish, you know you’ve got to go get him and win. So we were going to have to make a couple of putts,” Pavelski said. “I felt like I cut into his lead a little bit. Then all of a sudden it was over.”

Former LPGA Tour star Annika Sorenstam finished third with a 68 in a 27-round tie.

Charles Barkley posted his best finish in the event, tying for 58th place with a minus-four mark. His previous best was 60th in 1995.

“It feels really good,” Barkley said. “I’ve put in a lot of time and effort. I’ve been working really hard the last couple of years. The last couple of years haven’t been bad. I played really well the first two days and I’m proud of today’s round because I started out struggling and found a way to come together.”

Fish won $150,000 of the $750,000 prize.
