Clemson Soccer to Defend National Championship Next Month

The Clemson Tigers men’s soccer team will begin its schedule with a series of scrimmages designed to prepare for their season opener against Penn State on Aug. 22.

The Tigers will use the program to defend their national championship, which they won last year and is the fourth in school history, and the second under head coach Mike Noonan, who recently signed a contract extension through 2023.

Noonan became one of three Clemson coaches in school history to win two national championships, joining football coach Dabo Swinney and former men’s soccer coach Dr. I. M. Ibrahim.

The Tigers will play three preseason games leading up to the opener, two of which will be at home, but the first will be against the 49ers in Charlotte on Aug. 10.

Clemson then returns home for two more games, hosting Mobile on Aug. 13 and Georgia State on Aug. 17.

The Tigers will play two non-conference games before the ACC opener. The first is a regular-season opener and home opener against Penn State on Aug. 22. The next game is a trip to Columbia to face South Carolina in the Palmetto Series on Aug. 30.

ACC play begins at home on September 6 with a match against new ACC member Stanford.

The game is a rematch of last year’s NCAA quarterfinal matchup, which Clemson won 2-0. Stanford was the No. 1 team in the country at one point last season, according to both the United Soccer coaches and Top Drawer soccer rankings.

Clemson will face Wake Forest, North Carolina and Syracuse at home in ACC play, while the Tigers will host Boston College, Notre Dame, Louisville and Virginia Tech on the road and face the Hokies in the regular-season finale on Nov. 1.
