Road bike series returns to Whanganui

Cyclists set off up Reid’s Hill – with road cyclist Pat Johnson (centre) representing New Zealand in the Masters cycling events.

A group of 15 cyclists faced the start outside Durie Hill School on Sunday, July 14, in Wanganui Cycling Club’s first club road race series since Covid.

The riders score points in a series of five races held on the second Sunday of each month until November. They set off in different groups according to their ability and the events are open to all riders aged 15 and over. On Sunday they rode 35km past Fordell to the top of Reid’s Hill and back.

Whanganui Cycling Club President Marty Hewson said the club was delighted to see road racing return and welcomed cyclists of all abilities to take part. Registrations will be required by emailing [email protected] or by registering from 9.30am on the day of the race, with the race starting at 10am.

Matai Bartlett came first in the first race of the series, earning a total of five points.
