Swiatek advances to third round of Paris Olympics

World number one Iga Swiatek extended her Roland Garros winning streak to 23 on Monday, defeating France’s Diane Parry 6-1, 6-1 in the second round of the Olympics.

After a tense start to his second Olympic Games, She was trailing 5-3 in the second set of her opening round match against Romania’s Irina-Camelia BeguSwiatek was dominant against the home favourite in her 1 hour, 14 minute victory, avoiding the same fate that befell her in their first match three years ago. She broke the world number 59’s serve five times, faced no break points herself and allowed just 10 points in seven service games.

Swiatek won the last four games of her first-round match on Saturday, taking her streak of consecutive games to nine after winning the first five games against Parry. The Frenchwoman denied her 10th by clearing two set points and getting on the board in a five-deuce hold on serve, but Swiatek eventually took a one-set lead in the fifth set point. It was similar for Parry in the second set: she won her second game when she was already 2-0 down, and saved a break point in that hold.

The 21-year-old, who beat Nadia Podoroska in two tight sets in her Olympic debut, made 24 unforced errors in 14 games and earned an assist for Swiatek. Only eight of those winners were converted into goals.
