Rohit Sharma makes a clear one-sentence statement on international retirement as he awaits Gautam Gambhir’s reunion with Team India captain

Team India captain Rohit Sharma was one of three key players from the Indian team – the other two being Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja – who ended their T20I careers last month following the team’s T20 World Cup triumph. The team ended the country’s 11-year wait for an ICC title by beating South Africa in a dramatic title clash in Barbados.

While Virat Kohli confirmed his retirement from the format while receiving the Player of the Match award in the final, Rohit announced in the captain’s post-match press conference that this was his last T20I. Following the announcement, speculation about Rohit’s future in the other two formats increased significantly.

Rohit, who turns 37 this year, is undoubtedly approaching the twilight of his career. However, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has assured fans that Rohit will remain at the helm at least till the next World Test Championship final, if India qualify for the title challenge next year.

Shah had recently confirmed that Rohit will lead the team in the 2025 Champions Trophy and will continue to captain the side throughout the WTC campaign as India aim to reach the final for the third consecutive time.

Rohit on Sunday also definitively put to rest speculations about his general retirement. Rohit returned to the US a month after the T20 World Cup to inaugurate a cricket academy in Dallas and was asked about his retirement plans.

“I just said it. I won’t go that far. So obviously, you will see me playing for a while,” Rohit said at the event.

While Rohit, Kohli and Jadeja have been an integral part of the ODI and Test formats, India will enter a new era when they tour Sri Lanka later this month. Former opener Gautam Gambhir will join the team as the new head coach.

Gambhir replaces Rahul Dravid, who ended his tenure on a high note with a title triumph last month. Known for his outspoken and outspoken nature, Gambhir is a striking contrast to Dravid’s calm and diplomatic demeanor. The transition is expected to bring fresh energy and different strategies to the team, especially in partnership with captain Rohit Sharma.

However, both Rohit and Kohli are expected to be rested for the Sri Lanka tour. The break comes ahead of a tough Test season for India, featuring ten matches in three series against Bangladesh and New Zealand, as well as a tour to Australia.
