Meet the San Diego natives who brought home Olympic medals from Paris

Many San Diegans are returning from the 2024 Paris Olympics with significant hardware.

In sports ranging from skateboarding to rugby, San Diego County athletes won medals at this year’s Summer Olympic Games

Skateboard

This was the second Olympic Games to feature skateboarding, and San Diego County was well represented. especially on Team USA.

Encinitas resident Jagger EatonThe 23-year-old became the first San Diego native to walk the podium in Paris, taking silver in the men’s street event. Eaton won bronze at the 2020 Tokyo games.

Two San Diego men win medals in men’s park skate competition: Team USA Tom Schaar, 24 — San Diego Academy graduate — silver and Australia Keegan PalmerThe 21-year-old San Diego native took home the gold medal. But it was a close match. Schaar fell behind on his final run and narrowly missed out on the gold with a score of 92.3 compared to Palmer’s 93.11.

Women’s Rugby

The women’s rugby sevens team made U.S. Olympic history with a bronze medal in Paris. They became the first team to medal in any Olympic rugby sevens event. The history-making squad included three San Diego natives: Kayla Cannet26, from Fallbrook, Sara Levy28, from San Diego and Ilhona Maher27. Maher, also social media presenceHe is originally from Burlington, Vermont, but currently lives and trains in San Diego.

It was a dramatic final match, with the USA scoring in the final seconds to win the bronze medal against Australia, 14-12.

Cycling

San Diego Jennifer ValentineValente, 29, won the gold medal in the Olympic team pursuit cycling. Alongside teammates Kristen Faulkner, Chloe Dygert and Lily Williams, Valente completed the 4,000-meter endurance race in 4:04:306, beating the New Zealand team that finished in 4:04:927.

Valente grew up taking cycling lessons San Diego Velodrome in Balboa Park and would attend Tuesday race nights with his father, According to the San Diego Union-Tribune. She graduated from Cathedral Catholic High School and went to the University of Colorado Springs. This is her fourth Olympic medal.

Tennis

Taylor Fritz26, and partner Tommy Paul won the bronze medal in men’s doubles. Fritz is from Rancho Santa Fe. He turned pro in 2015 and holds a career-high singles ranking of world No. 5, achieved by the Association of Tennis Professionals on February 27, 2023.

Volleyball

Garrett Muagututia36 and the U.S. men’s volleyball team won the bronze medal. They beat Italy 3-0 in straight sets. Muagututia is from Oceanside. He went to UCLA.

Triple jump

Shanieka RickettsThe 32-year-old athlete won a silver medal for Jamaica in the triple jump at the Olympics.

Ricketts graduated from San Diego State University in 2014 and was inducted into the Aztec Hall of Fame in 2019.

Football

Even though I’m not from San Diego, Naomi Girma, 24 and Jaedyn Shaw19, has strong ties to San Diego. Both play for San Diego Wave FC.

The U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) will compete for the gold medal on Saturday, August 10 at 8 a.m. They will face Brazil.

Water Polo

Alex BowenThe 30-year-old athlete will compete with her teammates to bring the bronze medal to the USA at 01:35 on Sunday, August 11. They will face Hungary.

Bowen is from Santee and attended Santana High School. This is her third Olympics. Bowen was a guest on KPBS Midday Edition before the Paris games began.

Basketball

Kelsey EricThe 29-year-old and his Team USA teammates will face France in the final match of the Paris Olympics. The match will begin at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 11.

Plum is from Poway and attended La Jolla Country Day. This is her second Olympics. She won a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo games.

Rock climbing

Brooke RaboutouOn Saturday, 23, the women will compete in the sport climbing final. The rock climbing event will be at 01:15 and the lead event will be at 03:35

Raboutou graduated from the University of San Diego in 2023. He became the first American to qualify for the Olympics in sport climbing at the 2020 Tokyo games.
