Olympic TV show: US women’s basketball team wins 60th straight game | Olympics

Breanna Stewart and the U.S. women’s basketball team are headed to a familiar destination: the Olympic gold medal game.

Stewart led a balanced offense as the Americans beat Australia 85-64 in the semifinals on Friday, extending a 60-game winning streak dating back to the 1992 Barcelona Games.

The U.S. will face France for the gold medal at 6:30 a.m. Pacific time on Sunday. France beat Belgium 81-75 in overtime in the other semifinal.

“This streak is crazy. I mean, when I’m on TV, they tell me it started before I was born, which is crazy,” Stewart said. “It really shows the guys who paved the way and created USA Basketball and what it is now. So much appreciation for that and knowing that when you represent this jersey and you wear USA on your chest, the standards are high and there’s nothing higher than that.”

The team did not disappoint key viewers, including Sue Bird, Dawn Staley, Kevin Durant and Vanessa Bryant and their children.

The U.S. is trying to become the first team to win eight consecutive Olympic gold medals in any sport, closing the gap on the U.S. men’s team, which won seven straight from 1936-68.

The U.S. managed to take control of the match in the first half, giving coach Cheryl Reeve the opportunity to give limited playing time to her starters and more playing time to her bench players.

“The group that’s going to be out there will be a little more prepared and rested to give it their all,” Reeve said.

A win Sunday would mean Diana Taurasi’s sixth gold medal. The Americans’ most decorated Olympic basketball player, who was not starting for the first time since the 2004 Olympics, did not enter the game with 2:08 left in the third quarter with the U.S. leading 63-40. She missed two shots and played just over six minutes.

The USA took an early lead against Australia, but were only ahead 20–16 after the opening quarter. The Americans turned the game around in the second quarter, starting the period on a 12–0 run. The USA led 45–27 at halftime.

Aces guard Jackie Young had 14 points, Kahleah Copper had 11 points and Aces forward A’ja Wilson had 10 points for the Americans.

Isobel Borlase was the top scorer for Australia with 11 points, while Tess Madgen and Ezi Magbegor each had 10 points.

There was no shortage of WNBA players on the court either.

But while the American team boasts 12 WNBA All-Stars who have won multiple MVPs, the Australian roster is full of complementary players from around the league. Starting with five WNBA players, the Opals simply didn’t have the offensive muscle to compete with the US powerhouse.

In the end, the U.S. once again denied the Aussies a gold medal chance in a one-sided affair between the teams. The Opals have never beaten the U.S. in Olympic competition, losing in the gold medal game in 2000, ’04 and ’08.

The Australians also lost to the United States in the semi-finals of the 1996 and 2012 Olympics.
