Strategic Decisions Awaited for All Blacks Ahead of Argentina Challenge

By Mohamed Bahaa

As the Rugby Championship gets underway under the guidance of Scott ‘Razor’ Robertson, the All Blacks are preparing for possible selection arrangements for their match against Argentina.

Will Jordan Return?

After an impressive return to form for Tasman Mako in the NPC, where he scored a try, Will Jordan is set to rejoin the All Blacks. Razor see Jordan as a full-back rather than a winger, which presents a selection dilemma. Despite the difference in intensity between NPC and Test rugby, the match against Argentina is seen as an ideal opportunity to bring Jordan back into the game. His exceptional skill set is expected to ease concerns about his match fitness. The likely scenario is that Jordan will start at No. 15, with Sevu Reece and Mark Tele on the wings. Caleb Clarke could also be considered for the No. 11 jersey, which would put Beauden Barrett on the bench as a versatile option for the second half.

Midfield Preferences: Rieko Ioane or Billy Proctor

Rieko Ioane is expected to retain his position at No. 13. However, this match provides a perfect opportunity to test Billy Proctor in midfield alongside Hurricanes teammate Jordie Barrett. Proctor has had an outstanding season and shone on his debut against Fiji, controlling the game with flair. Although the Fiji match features an improving team, it is intriguing to give Proctor another chance against Los Pumas. With two Tests against Argentina, Proctor is expected to feature in at least one of them.

The Future of Sam Cane

Sam Cane, who has 95 Tests under his belt, is aiming to reach 100 caps in his final year of Test rugby. While his experience is invaluable, the team should consider whether more opportunities should be given to young talents like Dalton Papali, Luke Jacobson or Ethan Blackadder. Cane’s inclusion this weekend could strengthen the All Blacks’ slump and defence, but it may not solve their off-the-line problems. A line-up featuring Blackadder and Samipeni Finau, alongside interim captain Ardie Savea, could be more effective against Argentina’s strong team.

Second Row Thoughts: Sam Darry

Replacing Scott Barrett in the second row seems straightforward, with Tupou Vaa’i the logical choice. However, a bolder move would be to give Sam Darry another chance. Darry is not only a strong ball carrier, but also a good outside-the-line player, forming a good partnership with Patrick Tuipulotu at club level. Playing Darry against Argentina would add to his experience and improve the All Blacks’ second-row depth. With two Tests without Barrett, splitting the games between Darry and Vaa’i could be a smart strategy.

As the All Blacks prepare for their first ever Rugby Championship match, Razor Robertson’s squad selection decisions will play a key role in shaping the team’s performance against Argentina.
