Color of Hockey: Egypt program makes big strides on and off the ice

William Douglas has been writing The Color of Hockey blog since 2012. Douglas joined NHL.com in 2019 and writes about people of color in sports. Today, he covers Egypt Ice Hockey, which is hosting the Egypt Ice Hockey Cares 2024 event for orphans, children displaced by regional conflicts, and other youth at an ice rink in a Cairo shopping mall on July 5.

Egyptian Ice Hockey aims to be successful both on the ice and off the ice in its homeland.

That’s why the program hosted Egypt Ice Hockey Cares 2024, a day of competition involving more than 200 orphans, children displaced by regional conflicts and other young people on July 5 at a rink in the Sun City Mall in Cairo.

“Even though some of us live in the U.S., our roots are in Egypt and we always want to give back to our country,” said Yasser Ahmed, an executive member of Egypt Ice Hockey who lives in New Jersey. “The event went great. I could tell everyone had a great time. Seeing the smiles on the faces of kids who had never ice skated before, who had never seen ice before, getting out and enjoying a few hours on the ice to get away from the hardships they’ve been through.”
