Champions crowned, celebrations begin at 100th Birchmont – InForum

BEMIDJI – With Emily Israelson and Nate Deziel taking the Women’s and Men’s Division titles on Saturday, Birchmont’s remaining 100th winner was also announced at Bemidji Town and Country Club.

Mark Ewing moved to the top of the Executive Division with a 1-up win over Omar Daal. Ewing trailed by two after five holes before reeling off three straight wins to close the front nine.

Daal tied the match with a birdie on the 10th hole, then Ewing took a 1-up lead on the 12th hole. Daal tied again on the 15th hole, then Ewing took a 1-up lead with a birdie on the 17th hole. Ewing won with a par on the final hole.

Trent Wilcox edged out Dale Finck, who won the medal and the Senior Division Championship in the same race, with a 3-1 victory on Saturday.

Wilcox entered the turn with a 1-up lead, then made par on the 12th hole to get 2-up. Wilcox and Finck battled over the next four holes, with Wilcox securing the win by making par on the 17th hole.

Doug Taylor, the 15th seed in the Masters, added a Cinderella story to his list of winners.

Taylor won three straight games, beating medalist Wayne Caughey 3-2, seventh-ranked Bruce Pederson 4-3 and 14th-ranked Jack Seiberlich 3-1.

On Saturday, Taylor defeated Rick Vanyo to win his first Birchmont title. Taylor won four holes on the front nine to take a 2-up lead heading into the turn. Vanyo pulled away with a par 11 before Taylor won three of the final four holes to win 4-and-2.

Fourth-ranked Kolby Koerner of Grand Forks, North Dakota, swept his opponents in the Junior 17U group.

Koerner competed against Preston Miller in the championship match and got off to a hot start. Starting on the 10th hole, Koerner was 2-up on the 15th hole, then won the final two holes before playing the front nine.

Koerner matched Miller’s card on holes 1-3 before taking a 5-up lead on the fourth hole. Identical scores on holes five and six carried Koener to his first Birchmont title at age 16.

BTCC board treasurer and finance committee chair Jenna Palmiscno won the Women’s Executive Championship. The lowest seed in the eight-player field, Palmiscno defeated third seed Ronda Gangelhoff 2-1 on Saturday.

After losing the first hole, Palmiscno won four of the next five holes to go 3-up. Gangelhoff cut his lead to one at the turn, then made par at No. 10 to tie the match. Palmiscno won at Nos. 15 and 16 to move two ahead before winning the tournament with a par at No. 17.
