UNC Basketball Goal Is Big in Reclassification ‘Talk’

Notre Dame High School (Calif.) five-star forward Tyran Stokes, who received an offer from UNC basketball head coach Hubert Davis a little over a month ago, is currently ranked at the top of the 247Sports 2026 Composite alongside potential Tar Heel target and five-star guard Brandon McCoy Jr. from St. John Bosco High School. But there’s no guarantee Stokes will remain a prospect in 2026.

The agile fighter, at 6 feet 7 inches, 245 pounds, is projected as a one-time lottery pick regardless of the timeline, and he turns 17 in October. That means his 19th birthday falls in calendar year 2026, meaning he’ll be eligible for the 2026 NBA Draft if he’s a year removed from graduating from high school.

To achieve this, Stokes would need to reclassify to 2025 and likely play in college from 2025-26.

He’s seemingly still focused primarily on his development and fielding a number of offers along the way. However, on Peach Jam last week, Stokes told ESPN’s Jeff Borzello that he and his camp haven’t ruled out the option of reclassifying.

“We’ve had a few conversations about it,” Stokes, who admitted to having long been interested in UNC basketball, told Borzello, “but it wasn’t really the option I was considering.”

For now, the phenomenal talent remains one of four talents on the Tar Heel’s offer list come early 2026.
