Motorsport – Wehrlein takes Formula E lead with one race remaining

LONDON (Reuters) – Porsche driver Pascal Wehrlein took his third win of the season on Saturday and opened a three-point lead in the electric Formula E championship with one round remaining.

The former German Formula One driver, who was in third place ahead of the race, will be alongside Jaguar’s New Zealanders Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy in the final race at the ExCel in London on Sunday.

Previous leader Cassidy, who started the race in 17th place and finished in seventh place, was seven points behind after the 39-lap race.

The title hopes of DS Penske’s Jean-Eric Vergne, Nissan’s Oliver Rowland and Porsche’s Antonio Felix da Costa were dashed after all three failed to score.

Wehrlein passed Evans, who was on pole and also had a bonus for fastest lap, midway through the race and held on despite the late arrival of the safety car. Envision’s Sebastien Buemi finished third.

Cassidy suffered a broken steering wheel after colliding with the Andretti of last year’s champion Jake Dennis.
