Sri Lanka’s Jayawickrama charged with match-fixing allegations

Sri Lankan off-spinner Praveen Jayawickrama has been charged with three counts of violating anti-corruption laws over his failure to report match-fixing and obstructing an investigation, cricket’s global governing body has announced.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has revealed that 25-year-old Jayawickrama was approached for fixing international matches and was asked to fix another player in matches during the 2021 season of the Lanka Premier League.

“The Sri Lankan bowler reportedly deleted messages regarding his approach to conducting corrupt practices,” the ICC said in a statement. “Jayawickrama has 14 days from August 6, 2024, to respond to the charges.”

Jaywawickrama made his international debut by taking 11 wickets in the first Test against Bangladesh in April 2021. He has not played for Sri Lanka since June 2022.

Reuters Neither Jaywawickrama nor his representatives could immediately be reached for comment.
