A’s win 3-2 against White Sox with 3 runs in 7th inning after Chicago snaps 21-game losing streak

OAKLAND — Armando Alvarez and Zack Gelof hit RBI singles and Lawrence Butler drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt — all in the seventh inning — and the Oakland Athletics beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2 on Wednesday.

The White Sox lost their 10th straight game, a day after ending a 21-game losing streak that tied an American League record. Chicago (28-89) has not won in consecutive games since a three-game series from June 27-29. The White Sox fell to 8-24 in one-inning games and 0-67 when trailing after seven innings.

Oakland (48-68) improved to 5-1-1 in its last seven series.

Andrew Benintendi hit a two-run home run against A’s starter Joey Estes in the second inning, giving the White Sox an early lead.

Estes allowed two runs scored and six hits with four strikeouts in five innings but did not take part in the decision.

Chicago starter Davis Martin limited Oakland to four strikeouts in six innings pitched with two hits and one walk.

“He gave us a great opportunity to obviously win a baseball game,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “He went into the seventh inning with a 2-0 lead. … He looks really good. He’s a piece of this organization moving forward.”

Brent Rooker singled in Oakland’s seventh inning and Abraham Toro walked with one out. Alvarez and Gelof tied the game 2–2 with RBI singles.

Darell Hernaiz hit a grounder to short, but Gelof loaded the bases by passing Nicky Lopez’s fly ball to second base. Butler hit a sacrifice bunt that scored Alvarez and gave the Athletics a 3-2 lead.

“I think that’s probably what changed the momentum of the game,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said of Gelof’s hustle. “Those are the intangibles that we’re talking about. That’s why we love Zack, the way he plays the game. It’s not just about the innings and the strikes. It’s about the little things. And that little thing, that little detail, led us to win the game.”

Touki Toussaint (0-2) pitched one-third of an inning and allowed three runs in the defeat.

TJ McFarland (2-1) kept a clean sheet and earned its first win since April 28.

Mason Miller, who returned to the game from the 10-day injured list (a fractured left pinky), got the final three outs and made his 16th save of 18 chances.

“I’m excited to be back, be a part of the group and put together some Ws,” Miller said. “I think we’ve had great chemistry all year. It’s just a matter of putting in the effort on both sides of the ball. We’re seeing guys make those big shots, make those defensive plays. Those are the things that good teams do.”
