Several veteran golfers adjusted to the warmth of the weather during a game of individual bogey points at La Contenta Golf Club in Valley Springs on July 29.

Leading the way in the white-shirt flight was rookie Larry Youngblood, who was welcomed with open arms by the veterans. After his success, the other competitors will be after his blood. He scored the most points of the day (41). After scoring the lowest gross score of the day (79), the naughty Dave Mullen was alone in second place. A tie for third place was between Godfather Louis Luna and groupie heartthrob Matt Theodore. Luna’s group were left speechless in awe of his magnificent effort and he is now hero-worshipped by all three. Skeptics on the flight shouted, “We understand Theodore, but Louis, never!” He was treated like Rodney Dangerfield.

Ron Bassett finished fifth and was planning to get in shape for a month-long trip to Europe, but decided that this tour was a form thing. Rounding out the winner’s circle was former club champion Roger Ladd, who had recently tried out for the men’s Olympic gymnastics team. But when he jumped on the balance beam and it collapsed, that ended his chances.

In the gold T-shirt flight, our extraordinary elder statesman Ken Phillips continued on his way to winning first. Former Xerox employee Jim Sickler came in second. Jim faced Theodore to see who could beat the other. They forgot they were on different flights. Gary Stockeland’s Brinks truck was there to collect more loot as he took third place.

In the red tee flight, June’s third leading money winner Steve Weyrauch and flight champion Crown Prince Lourenco dueled again to defeat Weyrauch’s father figure for the second consecutive time. Steve took the first-place money and the father figure put him out of time for the next tournament.

For the first time, all par 3s were in the closest contest to the hole. On No. 2 of the Whites, left-hander Mike Johnson edged rookie Roberto Rivera for first place. On No. 1 of the Golds, a hard-nosed Frank Elizondo and Sickler finished second. On No. 4 of the Golds, no one reached the green. On No. 4 of the Golds, David Moyles and Mountain Ranch legend Norm Miley were the only three-putted greens.

In the Reds 8th, Earl Watkins putt landed 2 feet from the hole and he was high-fiving himself until he learned that Ray Pezzi, the gold tees fashion plate, had beaten him for the putt of the day. George Dillon finished second. From the Golds, Pezzi was magnificent as he passed Sickler for first place. From the Whites, Russ Hart won big as the only man to hit the green.

Weyrauch from the reds won the all-money race on the 13th, as he was the only one to hit the green. Sickler from the golds had a very successful day, as he was the only one to hit the green. Mullen and Rivera from the whites finished first and second.
