Bangladesh political crisis: What will be the fate of the Women’s T20 World Cup?

With the ongoing political crisis in Bangladesh and the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday, uncertainty prevails over which country will host the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup scheduled to be held in October.

Although the tournament is still a few months away, there is speculation that it could eventually be moved to an alternative venue. India, Sri Lanka and UAE have been kept as backup options. However, an ICC spokesperson said: Sports Star The global body is said to be “monitoring the situation closely” before deciding on future action.

“The ICC is closely monitoring developments in coordination with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), security agencies and our own independent security advisors. Our priority is the safety and well-being of all participants,” the spokesperson said.

If there is a change in the government, there is a possibility of a change in the BCB management and various sources in the participating Boards, including the BCCI, stated that the issue will be taken up with the ICC soon depending on the progress in Bangladesh and the BCB.

Despite several attempts by this publication, neither BCB President Necmettin Hasan Papon nor other Board members have commented on the matter.

Over 18 days, 10 teams will play 23 matches at two venues in Bangladesh (Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka and Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet) from October 3-20.

Sources confirmed that due to the ongoing confusion, neither the BCB nor the ICC have been able to start the ticketing process and even the media accreditation, which is normally done two months before the event, is yet to begin.

The issue was raised by several member countries at the ICC’s annual conference in Colombo, but it did not appear on the agenda and was not formally discussed.

In May, the ICC announced the T20 World Cup schedule in Dhaka at an event attended by India captain Harmanpreet Kaur and her Bangladeshi counterpart Nigar Sultana. Ahead of the event, the two captains met with then Prime Minister Hasina at her residence.
