Rebuilt bronze Jackie Robinson statue to be unveiled 6 months after original stolen

WICHITA, Kansas — A rebuilt bronze statue of Jackie Robinson will be sent home Monday by Minor League players and former Major League Baseball All-Stars, a little more than six months after the original statue was vandalized by thieves.

The original statue of the baseball icon holding a bat over his shoulder was cut off at the ankles in January, leaving only Robinson’s cleats.

The same statue will return to the park where about 600 children play in an urban youth baseball league called League 42, founded in 2013 and named after Robinson’s jersey number on the Brooklyn Dodgers. Playing for the Dodgers, Robinson broke Major League Baseball’s racial barrier in 1947.

According to posts on social media by League 42, representatives from Major League Baseball and former players such as All-Stars CC Sabathia and Dellin Betances are expected to join the crowd on Monday.

The nonprofit has been met with an outpouring of support and hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations since news of the stolen statue shocked the community and spread nationwide. This year, donations have helped replace the statue, improve the square where it sits, and improve the nonprofit’s facilities and programs, said Bob Lutz, executive director of League 42.

The reconstructed statue is identical to the original, with the mold still workable. Dedicated in 2021, the statue was created by artist John Parsons, who was a friend of Lutz’s before he died in 2022.

Firefighters found the charred remains of the original statue five days after it went missing. A man pleaded guilty and will serve nearly 15 years in prison, but most of that time is related to a theft that took place a few days after the statue heist.

Ricky Alderete was sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay $41,500 in restitution on Friday for stealing the statue, an act he said was motivated by his addiction to fentanyl.

The loneliness of the original cleats found a new home this year at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri.

Robinson played for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues before joining the Brooklyn Dodgers, paving the way for generations of Black American baseball players. He is not only a sports legend, but also a civil rights icon. Robinson died in 1972.
