The defending champions of the Paris Olympics women’s basketball tournament, the United States, will face history-making Nigeria in the quarterfinals on Wednesday following the draw on Sunday.

Nigerians have become the first African nation to advance to the last eight of the Olympic basketball tournament, including men’s and women’s.

They will have a tough task against the Americans, who have won the last seven championships.

Nigeria beat Canada 79-70 on Sunday to win the title, while the USA beat Germany 87-68 behind 19 points from Jackie Young and 14 from A’ja Wilson.

Hosts France, who won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Games three years ago, will face Germany, while Spain will take on Belgium.

The first match of the day will be played between Serbia and Australia on Wednesday.

The group stage matches of the men’s and women’s basketball tournament will be played near the northern city of Lille, followed by the knockout rounds in Paris.
