Lauren Greeny takes first-round lead over Macee Greenwood in women’s State Am

BUTTE — Defending champion Lauren Greeny of Pullman, Wash., and Macee Greenwood of Corvallis tied atop the leaderboard in the first round of the 107th Montana Women’s State Amateur Golf Championship at Butte Country Club.

Greeny, a Montana State golfer, and Greenwood, who plays for Boise State, shot 3-over 74 in Sunday’s opening round. Greeny made 14 pars and added a birdie on the 12th hole. Greenwood made 11 pars in Round 1 and made birdies on both the 12th and 16th holes.

University of Montana golfer Hanna Ports of Oro Valley, Ariz., enters Monday’s second round trailing by 5 over, as does Griz teammate Kylie Franklin of Chandler, Ariz.

Ports’ twin sister, Raina, also of UM, is in fifth place after shooting 8-over 79 on Sunday.

Greeny won the State Am last year in a playoff against Rocky Mountain College golfer Valentina Zuleta at Green Meadow Country Club in Helena. Greeny made an eagle putt on the playoff hole, No. 18, to edge Zuleta.

The second round will begin Monday morning at Butte Country Club.
