Sammy Dowd appointed Director of Basketball Operations

EVANSVILLE, INDIA – Entering his third year at the University of Evansville, Sammy Dowd has taken on the role of Director of Basketball Operations for both the Purple Aces men’s and women’s basketball teams.

“Sammy is not only one of the most resilient people you will ever meet, he is also one of the most grateful people you will ever meet. He is constantly positive and energetic, which makes people gravitate towards his energy,” said UE men’s basketball head coach David Ragland. “There are times in our profession when we are given ‘other tasks.’ These tasks are not always glamorous, but they are critical to the success of any program. Winning programs stand out from mediocre programs because they have individuals who take pride in completing those tasks.”

“He reflects that trait perfectly because it’s not a task he can handle. He has a problem-solving mentality and takes pride in helping in any way he can,” Ragland added.
“Sammy has exceeded expectations while serving as a graduate assistant. We look forward to retaining Sammy as our Director of Basketball Operations.”

Dowd, who played on the men’s team during his first two seasons at UE, will now be on the women’s team. Aces women’s basketball coach Robyn Scherr-Wells is excited about the opportunity to work with Down’s program.

“Sammy is a rising star in college basketball and I look forward to a unique partnership with Men’s Basketball where Sammy will help both programs,” Scherr-Wells exclaimed. “This is not only a testament to Sammy and the trust that Coach Ragland and I have in him, but also how men’s and women’s basketball work together toward the common goal of making UE the best basketball destination in the MVC.”

Dowd has filled many roles since arriving at UE in 2022. He oversaw team logistics while managing practice schedules and facilitating communication between coaches and student-athletes. In addition to his many administrative duties, Dowd played a key role in creating a smooth operational environment that allowed the coaching staff to focus on player development and game strategy. His work helped ensure compliance with NCAA regulations.

“I am delighted to return to the University of Evansville Men’s Basketball team as they enter their third season under the excellent leadership of David Ragland and his staff,” Dowd said. “This opportunity is a dream come true, it allows me to continue with a program that is deeply rooted in culture and family, and it is a special place to be. I am excited to help our exceptional athletes develop and achieve success.”

“I also want to thank Head Coach Robyn Scherr-Wells for the opportunity to help her program. I look forward to reducing her team’s workload and increasing their efficiency,” Dowd added. “I am incredibly excited to work with and learn from both programs. Evansville is starting to feel like home and I am happy to be back.”
