‘I’m on cloud nine’ – Maddi Wesche wins silver in shot put

Maddison-Lee Wesche won the silver medal in a thrilling contest in the women’s shot put final at the Paris 2024 Olympics this morning.

German Yemisi Ogunleye emerged as the champion before engaging in a nail-biting battle with Wesche for the top spot.

Wesche held the lead for most of the final, but Ogunleye produced a remarkable shot on the final lap to steal the lead from the Kiwi rider.

Ogunleye had the crowd excited before a throw of 20.00m. With one last opportunity to retake the lead and grab the gold medal, Wesche gave it her all. Unfortunately her final effort fell short at 19.68m.

But Wesche’s earlier throw of 19.86 meters was also her personal best and earned her the silver medal.

Describing his feelings after the incident, Wesche said: Reporter“I’m on cloud nine right now. I would like to win the gold medal, everyone wants the gold medal, but a silver medalist wouldn’t be bad either.”

“I was just trying to keep the same mindset, stay calm, be happy, trust the pattern that I’m working on and training with, and let the work do itself,” she said when asked about her mindset during the competition.

Drawing attention to the competitive nature of the women’s shot put branch, Wesche said that it managed to stay afloat despite the intense competition.

“I don’t put any expectations or pressure on myself. You know, it might be the Olympics, but it’s still a competition. So I keep the same mentality. Keep being happy. Keep smiling.

“Women’s shot put is very competitive right now and there are a lot of women in the goal who are clearing 21 meters and 22 meters. So to be part of a group of women who are not only competitive but also nice people that I enjoy being around, I think it’s a good history to be a part of that.”

A Kiwi woman has topped the podium in the shot put event at the last five Olympic Games. Valerie Adams won gold in Beijing and London, silver in Rio and bronze in Tokyo. Wesche’s silver at Paris 2024 continues that streak.

Wesche ran to his family after the incident.

“My sisters were in the front row and then my mom, my other sisters and other family members came down to hug me. There are other family members in the stadium but I haven’t seen them yet.

“They were just so proud. My mom was crying and my sister couldn’t speak and they were so happy. I think even my coach can’t speak.”
