BYU medical school under construction

PROVO, Utah — Brigham Young University will gain a medical school, the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Monday.

The medical program at BYU will focus on “international health issues affecting members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Church’s humanitarian efforts around the world,” the church said in a statement.

Church said plans for the program will not include building a hospital at BYU. Instead, BYU is in talks with Intermountain Health to establish a relationship between the two.

Church also said other collaborations will be developed, including with BYU’s University of Utah.

No timeline was given for the project, but the church said it will announce more detailed plans for the medical school at BYU in the future.
