Swiatek wipes away tears to win consolation bronze

Known as the Clay Queen, Swiatek said that expectations had a negative impact on her during the Olympic tournament.

“Yesterday I realised I wasn’t actually playing for myself, I was playing more for everyone, for my country, for my team, for everyone who hopes for me to win a medal and possibly a gold medal,” said the four-time French Open champion.

“I didn’t really realize how deep it was inside me and how much I was carrying. I know I probably wasn’t playing my A game here. I didn’t really feel like I was able to move naturally and the way I’m used to on clay. But I’m happy that I got through it and I’m here with a bronze medal.”

Swiatek, who won her third consecutive French Open title at Roland Garros last month, did not speak to the media after her defeat to Zheng but made her feelings clear a day later.

“Maybe I was a little bit too arrogant with myself because I thought I’ve dealt with a lot of pressure before, I think I’ll be able to handle this pressure too,” he said.

“And now I’m really motivated to work harder and I think I’ll be a little more humble.”

The final between Zheng and Croatia’s Donna Vekic will be played on Saturday.
