Sting Ray Robb survived a horrific four-car crash on the final lap of an IndyCar Series race at Iowa Speedway on Monday (AEST).

Robb was injured when the American’s car collided with the slower car of Alexander Rossi as he exited turn two.

Robb’s car flipped twice and overturned as it skidded down the back straight.

Kyle Kirkwood and Ed Carpenter were also involved in the accident, with Carpenter’s vehicle on top of Kirkwood’s.

“It was a very scary event,” Kirkwood said.

“I’ve never seen a car fly through the air in front of me before.”

Robb gave a thumbs-up sign as he was loaded into an ambulance and taken to the care center.

The 22-year-old was later taken to hospital by helicopter and treated.

“Sting Ray is up and running, alert and in good spirits,” AJ Foyt Racing said in a statement.

Kirkwood said she felt “claustrophobic” when she saw Carpenter was on top of her car.

“I hate being stuck in a car, there’s no doubt about that,” he said, according to Stan Sport.

“The security team came to me, they were there within seconds. They calmed me down and said ‘you’re okay, we will help you, we are here for you’.

“That was very comforting to me – but no, when you’re in a crash and there’s a car on top of you or you’re trapped the first thing that comes to mind is going up in flames and a driver’s first instinct is to just get out of the car…

“It was definitely a very, very scary wreck. As soon as I saw it, they actually slowed down a lot because Rossi was already going slow and the Sting Ray was in the air and when you sit upright on the road with one of these cars it’s like a parachute.

“I let go of the gas pedal, I went out of the corner and I spun myself immediately. It’s unfortunate. Sorry to the guys, we were having a great race there.”
