Tambellup’s Penny Squibb makes her long-awaited Olympic Games debut as the Hockeyroos face South Africa in their opening match

Tambellup hockey star Penny Squibb will begin her Olympic Games campaign on Sunday when the Hockeyroos play their opening match in Paris.

The Hockeyroos will face South Africa in their first pool match at 6.45pm on Sunday, with Squibb making his long-awaited Olympic debut.

The West Australian defender was cruelly ruled out with a leg injury as the squad prepared to jet off to the Tokyo Olympics.

Squibb, 31, has worked incredibly hard since the heartbreaking news and has been rewarded by being selected in the Hockeyroos’ latest team in Pairs.

The player, who played in 56 matches for his country and scored 7 goals, will add to his number of appearances at the Olympic Games with the hockey tournament to be held between July 27 and August 10 this year.

The Hockeyroos will face Great Britain on Monday at 11pm WA time after their opening match, followed by the USA on Wednesday at 7.15pm.

The Hockeyroos’ final two games in the group will be against Argentina on August 2 at 14:15 and against Spain on August 3 at 18:45.

The women’s quarterfinals will be played on August 5-6, and the semifinals will be played on August 7-8.

The women’s gold medal match will be played on August 10, and the bronze medal play-off will be played on August 9.

The Hockeyroos have won three Olympic golds, the last of which was won in front of their home fans at the memorable 2000 Sydney Games.
