Marathon cyclists named to ARA Australian Cycling Team for 2024 UCI Marathon World Championships

Six cyclists have been selected to represent the ARA Australian Cycling Team at the 2024 UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships in Snowshoe, USA.

The AusCycling National Selection Panel today confirmed the cyclists who will compete in the championships on 21-22 September.

Six-time national marathon champion Brendan Johnston will be competing for the second time after qualifying for the World Championships for the first time in 2022.

The Canberra athlete will join Tali Lane Welsh and Joel Green in the green and gold jersey in the elite men’s race, both competing in their second World Championships.

Lane Welsh, who finished 47th in last year’s race in Scotland, took part in the Otway Odyssey earlier in the year, while Green, who finished in the top 10 at the AusCycling Marathon National Championships, is returning to the international scene after finishing in the top 60 at the world event in 2023.

In the women’s event, national champion silver medallist Izzy Flint and bronze medallist Ella Bloor have been selected to take part in the marathon World Championships for the first time.

Another member of the team is three-time national marathon champion Peta Mullens.

Despite the wealth of experience the Bendigo cyclist brings, this will also be her first marathon World Championships.
