China’s tennis players have impressively performed at the 2024 Olympics, with their best-ever results in both the women’s singles and mixed doubles. Zheng Qinwen won China’s second Olympic tennis gold medal and its first in women’s singles on Saturday, beating Donna Vekic of Croatia 6-2, 6-3. Zhang Zhizhen and Wang Xinyu won silver in the mixed doubles on Friday, narrowly losing a thrilling three-set match against the Czech Republic.

  • Inspired by Li NaZheng’s historic victory came on the same court where her idol Li Na became China’s first Grand Slam champion in 2011. “I feel like I’m going to make my country proud, I’m proud of myself,” she said. “My family is at home, I’m sure they’re yelling at the TV. I fight every match. I have a special energy when I play for my country. I never give up.”

  • Silver won through hard struggle: The mixed doubles team, formed at the last minute, expressed pride in their achievement and hoped to inspire a new generation of Chinese tennis fans. Wang said: “Right now, I am grateful to be a tennis player. Ten years ago or 15 years ago, not many people knew about this sport. I am very happy with this progress.”
