Saina Nehwal on comparisons to cricket

Young batsman Kolkata Knight Riders batsman Angkrish Raghuvanshi came under scrutiny recently for mocking Indian badminton star Saina Nehwal in a now-deleted social media post. After Nehwal claimed that sports like badminton, tennis, basketball are physically more challenging than cricket, Raghuvanshi mocked her on social media platform X.

In a now deleted post, Raghuvanshi said, “Let’s see what Bumrah does when he throws a 150k bumper on his head.”

Nehwal recently responded to Raghuvanshi’s criticism by appearing on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast and claimed that Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah cannot handle his spike.

“How will you be Virat at that level? How will you be Rohit Sharma? A lot of players need to be like them. They can’t be. Only a few are like that. But I feel it’s more of a skill-based sport. And bowlers, I agree. I wouldn’t die there. Why would I face Jasprit Bumrah anyway? If I had been playing for eight years, maybe I would have said Jasprit Bumrah,” Nehwal said.

“If Jasprit Bumrah plays badminton with me, maybe he won’t be able to handle my swing. We shouldn’t fight with ourselves in our own country for these things. That’s what I mean. Every sport is best in its own place. But I mean give importance to other sports as well. Otherwise, where will we get the sports culture from? And cricket, Bollywood will always be our focus,” he added.
