Last year’s champion Jessica Pegula advanced to the quarterfinals of the National Bank Open in Toronto

TORONTO (AP) — Defending champion Jessica Pegula advanced to the National Bank Open quarterfinals by defeating qualifier Ashlyn Krueger 6-2, 6-4 in windy conditions Friday.

Pegula, the third-seeded player from nearby Buffalo, New York, took advantage of Krueger’s nine double faults. Last year in Montreal, Pegula beat Liudmila Samsonova in the final.

In the night session, the 14th seeded Diana Shnaider faced off, while the 2nd seeded Aryna Sabalenka faced off against Katie Boulter.

In the first matches, Taylor Townsend beat fourth seed Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 6-1, while eighth seed Emma Navarro defeated 11th seed Marta Kostyuk 7-5, 7-5.

Amanda Anisimova advanced to the next round after No. 10 Anna Kalinskaya of Russia withdrew due to dizziness. Anisimova won the first set 6-2.
