Ollie Pope says England can score ‘500 or 600’ in one day ahead of third Test match against West Indies

Ollie Pope reckons he could score “600 at some point” in a single game as England prepare for their third Test against the West Indies.

Their second series against India this summer is likely to be a tougher test, but in Nottingham they scored more than 400 runs in both innings for the first time in their history.

The third Test will start at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Friday.

England’s vice-captain Pope struck an optimistic tone, saying they were fighting to secure victory.

“There’s a real hunger – there’s always a hunger – but there’s something extra in the batting line-up now,” Pope said.

“As a batting unit we want to be as ruthless as possible, but still play that way because it’s our natural game. Obviously, being ruthless is part of Test cricket as well.”

Pope had reached 100 points in the previous game and while he admits that ‘Bazball’s aggressive style has caused criticism and problems, he believes the approach has been fully embraced by the team.

Pope was one of England’s three hundredth scorers in the second Test, along with Joe Root and Harry Brook.

“I was asked on day one, ‘are you told to play like this?’ No, you’re not. It’s just our natural play and the way we do it,” he continued.

“Sometimes we can get 280-300 points in a day, but that’s not a problem and it’s probably because we read the situations.

“There may also be a day in the future where we can go and get to 500 to 600 at some point. And that’s a great thing to have.”
