No change in F1 points distribution

Following the meeting held by the F1 Commission, it was decided that no changes would be made to the points system and that the cars would be made heavier in the name of “driver welfare”.

The sport was even considering changing the points distribution, perhaps even giving points to all finishers, in a bid to ‘spice things up’, but that will no longer happen.

A number of decisions were taken at the Formula 1 Commission meeting held today at the Formula 1 Executive office in London and chaired by FIA Single-Seater Director Nikolas Tombazis and Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali.

Championship points

Following consideration of the recent proposal to extend the points allocation beyond 10th place in Grand Prix finishes, it was unanimously decided that no changes will be made to the distribution of Championship points (as described in Articles 6.4 and 6.5 of the Sporting Regulations).

Minimum weight – car and driver

For the driver’s well-being, the minimum weight for the driver will be increased from 80 kg to 82 kg. As a result, the minimum weight – the mass of the vehicle without fuel – will be increased from 798 kg to 800 kg for 2025.

Pre-season tests for 2026

The 2026 pre-season testing plan will feature nine test days spread across three test events.

2026 Regulations

The overall strategic objectives of the 2026 Regulations were reiterated, stating that the primary aim was to deliver fast and closer racing that would continue to impress and excite fans. An update was provided on the timeline for the 2026 Regulations, covering Technical, Sporting, Financial and Environmental issues, and that the FIA’s ongoing collaboration with all teams was on track to deliver the objectives and was moving in the right direction for the finalisation of the Regulations. Following further discussions in the upcoming Technical and Sporting Advisory Committees, an update on the 2026 Regulations, relating to sporting and technical regulations, will be presented to the World Motor Sport Council on 17 October. An extraordinary F1 Commission meeting will be held on 2 October to discuss the 2026 issues.

Financial Legislation

It was confirmed that costs related to maternity/paternity leave, sick leave and team entertainment should remain outside the cost limit.
