‘I’ve always dreamed of doing this’ – Xander Schauffele enjoys ‘best round’ of his life after winning 152nd Open

Schauffele shot a bogey-free 65 to finish nine under par, two shots ahead of Billy Horschel and Justin Rose, two months after making his big debut at the U.S. PGA Championship in Valhalla.

“It was, at the top, the best round I’ve ever played,” Schauffele said when asked to evaluate his last round.

The Olympic champion started the day one stroke behind Horschel but made birdies on the sixth and seventh holes on a 34-putt front nine and made further putts on the 11th, 13th, 14th and 16th holes to overtake compatriot Brian Harman and make it the American’s clean sweep in majors this season.

“This is an honor for me, I’ve always dreamed of this,” Schauffele added.

“The walk to 18 is really cool with the yellow leaderboards, the fans and the standing ovation. It’s one of the coolest feelings I’ve ever had in my life.

“I had goosebumps walking down and had to quickly refocus myself because the tournament is not over yet. I’m looking forward to enjoying it with my family.”

Schauffele has previously been known as a player who struggled to win major tournaments but felt his victory at Valhalla in May stood him in good stead in South Ayrshire.

“It was tough. It was very tough,” he said. “I think winning my first one helped me a lot on the back nine today.

“There was a sense of calmness. It helped a lot in one of the toughest back nines I played in the tournament.

“To win two major championships in one year is a dream come true. It took me so long to win just one and now to win two is something else.

“It means a lot, it’s something we’ve all been playing for. It’s definitely not something I’ve been comfortable with yet and I can’t wait to sit back and spend a moment with this Claret Jug.”

Schauffele said he has not yet decided what he will drink from the famous cup, adding, “I wonder what my father will choose as his first drink from this.”

“He’ll have to decide what to put in it because he’ll be the one taking the first sip.”
