Scheffler doesn’t disappoint in Olympic effort | News, Sports, Jobs

The U.S. team entered this year’s Olympic golf competition in Paris as heavy favorites and they certainly did not disappoint.

After a slow start, American Scottie Scheffler came from behind in the final round on Sunday to win the gold medal, shooting a blistering 9-under par 62 on his way to victory.

The rigors of competition can toughen many athletes, but you could see the 28-year-old golfer’s emotions overflowing as he burst into tears during our national anthem.

In fact, Scheffler’s reaction during the medal ceremony was proof of how much the victory meant to him.

Always the likable athlete, Scheffler won the heart of nearly every American golf fan with his gold medal and his win last Sunday.

New PGA event in PA

The PGA Tour recently announced a new event for the 2025 season. The Truist Championship will be held at the historic Philadelphia Cricket Club.

Local golf fans looking to travel to eastern PA next year will have the opportunity to see one of the best courses of the season with this tournament set to be the signature event. Nearly all of the top 50 golfers in the world will be competing.

Although the exact date of the tournament has not yet been determined, it is most likely to take place in May next year.

Battle by the River

One of the best events in the area will be taking place this weekend in Bedford County.

“Battle by the River” is a team competition held between neighboring clubs of the Down River and Bedford Elks.

The Ryder Cup format has been a highly competitive event over the last few years, bringing out plenty of emotion. Last year’s contest was particularly exciting, with the Bedford Elks recording their first victory.

This year’s game will begin on Saturday at the Bedford Elks and conclude on Sunday at Down River.

PA senior amateur

Iron Masters’ Ron Hinish had a strong showing earlier this week at the Pennsylvania Senior Amateur Championship played at Llanerch Country Club just outside Philadelphia.

Hinish tied for 22nd place in the super senior category with laps of 80 and 79.

During the second week of August 1974, PGA star Bob Toski gave a golf demonstration at Sinking Valley Country Club.

Toski, who was the Tour’s top money earner in 1954, held a golf practice clinic attended by more than 300 people and then played an 18-hole match with area standout golfer Bo DelGrosso and local pros Frank Kiraly and Jim Mullen.
