F1 Commission scraps plan to expand F1 points system

Plans to extend the points system in Formula One beyond the top 10 in grand prix finishes have been cancelled following a meeting of the Formula One Commission.

Earlier this year, a proposal was made to pay points for at least the top 12 drivers, with the intention of providing more incentive for the midfield teams who may struggle to break into the top 10. Having more points-paying positions would both give more meaning to individual battles during the race and make it clearer how teams will be ranked at the end of the season, as teams are less likely to finish with equal points or zero points.

However, after further investigation, the Formula 1 Commission meeting in London “unanimously decided that no changes would be made to the distribution of championship points.”

The bulk of the meeting focused on the 2026 regulations, with an update on the progress of the regulations following team feedback. Further meetings of F1’s technical and sporting advisory committees will be discussed in more detail before an extraordinary F1 Commission meeting is called for October 2, ahead of the World Motor Sport Council meeting on October 17.

Due to significant changes in regulations, it has been decided that pre-season testing in 2026 will consist of a total of nine days of running, divided into three pre-season tests. There is currently only one three-day test during pre-season.

A small change has also been confirmed, with a 2kg increase in minimum driver weight to 82kg in 2025 on driver welfare grounds.
